Last week, under a wide open sky at Van Derveer Elementary School, that magic was in full bloom.
Thanks to a wonderful mini-grant from the Native Plant Society – Somerset Chapter, we had the privilege of delivering a vibrant collection of native plants for the school’s butterfly enclosure.
Early on a beautiful fall morning, we greeted a group of enthusiastic Pre-K students, who were ready and curious to see what we had in store for them. With the excitement that only young children can provide, we guided the students on how to properly dig a small hole, and gently place each plug. In no time at all, all 25 plants were in the ground.

Together, we planted a palette of species:
- Giant Purple Hyssop
- Orange Coneflower
- River Oats
- Sweet Scented Joe Pyeweed
The planting happened at the perfect time, as we were able to work alongside the Somerville Environmental Commission, who were gearing up to help students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade add over 100 native wildflowers to six raised garden beds in the same vicinity.
Many students shared that this was their first time planting anything, expressing their excitement to watch what each seed would eventually grow into.
We are so incredibly grateful to the Native Plant Society – Somerset Chapter, as well as the dedicated teachers and administrators at Van Derveer, for helping us cultivate this space. We’re excited to see what flourishes in the spring!
