Children’s Nature Books that Educate and Inspire

By John April 22, 2025

To celebrate this Earth Day, I’ve gathered a few well-loved books from my family’s shelves. These aren’t just educational reads; they’re truly inspiring journeys through the natural world.

We Are Water Protectors

Written by Carole Lindstrom, Illustrated by Michaela Goade

Here to inspire both children and adults, this book discusses the importance of keeping our water clean and safe. It showcases an Indigenous-led movement from the perspective of a child.

Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt

Written by Kate Messner, Illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal

From the same series as Over and Under the Snow and Over and Under the Pond. This book explores what happens in a young girl’s garden throughout each season.

They All Saw A Cat

Written and Illustrated by Brendan Wenzel

This pleasantly illustrated book shows what a cat may look like from the perspective of different animals, allowing the reader to reflect on the unique ways critters – and humans – may see the world.

I hope these favorite reads from our home inspire your own family’s journey into the wonders of nature and different ways of seeing the world. There’s a whole universe of stories waiting to be discovered! We encourage you to visit your local library or bookstore and ask for their recommendations to continue the adventure.
